- RETIREMENT ANNOUNCED. By Benjamin Bradlee, 69, gruff, urbane
- executive editor of the Washington Post for 23 years; effective
- on Sept. 1, six days after his 70th birthday; in Washington.
- Appointed managing editor of the Post in 1965 and executive
- editor in 1968, Bradlee aggressively rebuilt the newspaper into
- one of the nation's leading dailies. Under his sway, the Post
- won 23 Pulitzer Prizes, including one in 1973 for its coverage
- of the Watergate scandal. He will be succeeded by Leonard
- Downie Jr., who has been the Post's managing editor since 1984.
