  4.     RETIREMENT ANNOUNCED. By Benjamin Bradlee, 69, gruff, urbane
  5. executive editor of the Washington Post for 23 years; effective
  6. on Sept. 1, six days after his 70th birthday; in Washington.
  7. Appointed managing editor of the Post in 1965 and executive
  8. editor in 1968, Bradlee aggressively rebuilt the newspaper into
  9. one of the nation's leading dailies. Under his sway, the Post
  10. won 23 Pulitzer Prizes, including one in 1973 for its coverage
  11. of the Watergate scandal. He will be succeeded by Leonard
  12. Downie Jr., who has been the Post's managing editor since 1984.
